Heat treatment process plays an important role in mould production. It involves the use of heating and cooling to alter the grain structure, physical properties and sometimes chemical properties of mould steel, in order to achieve desired mould steel properties. For example, proper heat treatment techniques, including quenching and tempering processes to harden and to improve wear resistant of mould steel, can prolong tool life. Typically, steel data sheet is a good source of heat treatment parameters. However, factors such as mould size, and geometry mould dimension and mould shape can affect heat treatment parameters, where adjustments have to be made in order to achieve the best heat treatment quality. Besides the optimised heat treatment parameters, advance and reliable heat treatment facilities are also important to the heat treatment quality. For example, if the heat treatment furnace cannot reach a desire vacuum pressure during quenching, de-carbonisation can occur on the mould steel surface at such high processing temperature, resulting in poor mould surface quality and increasing risk of mould cracking.
